Panetta Visits Military Bases In Italy

On his way home from a week-long trip to countries in the Middle
East and NATO headquarters in Belgium, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta
made stops at two military bases in Italy, including Naval Air Station
Sigonella, to thank U.S. and NATO troops for their service.
New Safeguards Aim to Prevent Security Breaches

President Barack Obama issued an executive order, Oct. 7, 2011,
that strengthens the government’s information and computer security
policies and practices to prevent breaches such as the 2010 WikiLeaks
episode.
Carter Sworn in as Deputy Defense Secretary

Ashton B. Carter was sworn in as deputy defense secretary in a
private Pentagon ceremony, Oct. 6, 2011. Carter served as undersecretary
of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics from April 2009
until taking over as deputy defense secretary.

Amphibious assault vehicles departed the well deck of the
amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans during a training
exercise in the Pacific Ocean, Oct. 4, 2011. The New Orleans and
embarked Marines assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are
conducting composite training unit exercise as part of the Makin Island
Amphibious Ready Group.
